Simple Home Modifications that Make Homes Safer for Seniors

Anyone that has taken care of an elderly person knows that there are certain things that will need to be done to their home in order to make it safe for them to live. More elderly people prefer to stay in their own homes for as long as they can. To help them stay in their home longer there are some things that can be done to their homes in order to make them safer.

Home Modifications to Make the Homes of Seniors Safer for Them

The Bathroom

  • Install handles near the toilets to aid in getting up and down.
  • Add a tub with a seat.
  • Place a walk around tub or shower with plenty of handles and a non-slip surface.
  • Install an emergency cord in case they need help.

The Living Quarters

  • Make sure that all the electrical cords are against the walls or bundled behind the furniture.
  • Fasten all the rugs and other items to the floors that could bunch up and create trip hazards.
  • Think about installing levers on entry doors instead of doorknobs. These are easier for seniors to use.
  • Install easy ramps over doorways that change from carpet to tile so the wheelchair or walker does not get stuck on the flooring strip.
  • Install a chair lift to help get them up and down staircases.
  • Make sure that the lighting is bright enough in all rooms.
  • Install night-lights throughout the house so they can see at night and early in the morning.

The Kitchen Area

  • Lower counter tops and appliances to help seniors with wheel chairs use countertop equipment.
  • Use glass stoves that use induction technology to prevent burns and other injuries.
  • Get drawers that are easy to open.
  • Install shelves that slide open for easy access to dishes and other contents.
  • Remove the slick tile and install traction-based vinyl to prevent them from slipping and falling as they move throughout the room.

A safer home for seniors starts with modifying the house for ease of use and safety. A modified home will allow seniors to remain independent longer and reduce accidental injuries that could interfere with their desire for independence.
